Bristol
The largest city in the West Country, Bristol has a long history of seafaring and the early colonisation of America. John Cabot sailed from Bristol in 1497 to discover the northern half of the New World. The world's first iron steamship, SS Great Britain, has been restored to its 1843 glory - weighing 3,443 tons, it was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, as was the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge which spans the 250-foot deep Somerset Gorge. Close to the harbour is "At-Bristol", a state-of-the-art museum which offers "fun and education" in equal measures. Here you can go on a 3-D journey to an international space station, through the human body, or over snow-capped mountains and under deep oceans. Set in beautiful grounds, this museum is a true highlight of any visit to Bristol. The Theatre Royal in King Street is the oldest working playhouse in the United Kingdom. Home to the Bristol Old Vic, it was built in 1766, and backstage tours are available twice a week. The pedestrianised shopping centre of Broadmead is the largest retail complex in the city, with many famous store names, while speciality shops can be found in the Georgian setting of Clifton Village, where the shops are interspersed with parks and gardens. The St Nicholas Markets, first opened in 1745, sell antiques and handcrafted gifts and jewellery. Although it is not strictly a tourist centre, Bristol has much to recommend it.
