Girona

Just over an hour from Barcelona, the walled city of Girona stands on a fortress above the River Onyar and reflects a wide cross-section of cultures as befits a city that was besieged 21 times during the 18th century! While most of the modern city lies on the west side of the river, the main monuments and attractions are situated on the east. The 15th century cathedral boasts the widest unsupported Gothic arch in the world, but much of the city's beauty is within its medieval streets, especially the Jewish quarter. Girona hosts many fiestas, in which traditional dances called ‘sardanas' are performed. If you visit in July, be sure to see the Cantada de Habaneras festival while at Easter in nearby Verges you can see the ‘Dance of Death'. Also nearby are the quaint villages of Cadaques, Pals and Rose. Cadaques was a meeting place for such Spanish icons as Lorca and Picasso, and it was also the location for Salvatore Dali's summer house. Back in Girona, you can relax at one of the bars in the centre of the old city, or go down by the riverside to find one of the many daytime cafes.
