Austria - Travel Guide

Description
Austrians have a strong sense of national pride; they are helpful and friendly and always welcome visitors enthusiastically. They have a right to be proud as Austria is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. From Lake Neusidlersee in the east to Lake Constance in the west, in the summer months Austria is alive with an abundance of flowers on its mountain slopes and vibrant with colour and tradition with an endless stream of festivals and artistic events. Bordered by Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic, the whole country rests among some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever find and it is particularly well-known for its spectacular mountains, a haven in winter for snow sporting enthusiasts from all over the world who arrive to view the dramatic mountain scenery during its transformation into a winter wonderland. Austria has a rich cultural heritage, evident all over the country but particularly predominant in the capital, Vienna which is one of the great cultural and commercial centres of Europe with a wealth of flamboyant architecture and vitality. Although there is always a stunning view to be had, wherever you travel in Austria, the country has some diversity of landscape. The fertile plain of the River Danube has created wonderful areas to nature-watch or cycle through, with timeless villages and lush farms in easy co-existence. In the south-west, the undeveloped Alpine scenery rises dramatically above luxuriant areas of flora and fauna and Eastern Austria is a blend of interesting places to visit whilst admiring the gorgeous mix of scenery. The stunning scenery of this breath-taking country is one of the main reasons that tourists flock to Austria in their thousands. Combine this with lakes, clean air and flower-filled meadows and you realise why Austria is a wonderful destination to visit at any time of the year.

Driving Guide
Always drive on the right! Always carry your driving licence, vehicle registration document and certificate of motor insurance. If your licence does not include a photograph, keep your passport handy. Your vehicle must carry a warning triangle and a first-aid kit. The minimum age for a driver is 18, while children must be at least 12 before they can sit in a front seat, unless they have a special seat or seat-belt or they are over 1.5m tall. The use of front and rear seat-belts is compulsory at all times. Speed limits are rigorously applied: 130km/h on motorways; 100km/h on open roads; 50km/h in built-up areas. In the Voralberg and the Tyrol the maximum speed is 80km/h. Radar traps are frequent, and heavy on-the-spot fines are applied. Make sure you obtain a receipt at the time. Headlights must be on at all times in built-up areas, while horns are prohibited in Vienna and are limited elsewhere as indicated by signs. Motorways (expressways) carry tolls (the Austrian word is "mautstelle"). If you intend using this form of road, you must display a tax sticker (vignette). These stickers, valid for a year, two months or 10 days, can be purchased at petrol stations close to the border in adjoining countries or on the Austrian frontier. Do NOT drink and drive.

Hotel Class: Hotels are officially classified by either the Federal Association of Austrian Hotelkeepers (5-star properties only) or the hotel keepers' trade group in each Federal Province (1-star to 4-star properties) using the standard 1-star up to 5-star system. In addition, a few independently minded properties tack an unofficial half star onto their official rating, which is represented here by use of brackets thus (*). Hotels designated "Garni" are bed and breakfast only. Some pensions are included in the normal hotel categories, so a row of stars may not always indicate a high degree of luxury.
